My thesis questions the subversive language of furniture by manipulating the drawers around the skirt of three tables. Called Under the Table because of furniture’s sneaky, indirect way of changing the way we relate to one another.
The drawers are direct symbols of power within the household as the head of the table usually presides over the family dinner. In the first table, one drawer is placed at the head & this inequality is magnified through a dark, glossy finish and dovetail joints. The second table has six drawers, effectively equalizing the balance of power at the table. The third has no drawers, contrasting the subtle differences between the other two and eliminating the notion of power over others. The analogy can be read politically, the first is like a monarchy, hence Victoria, the second like communism, Karl, and the third anarchy, Sid.
